Weekend preview: Art, music and cars; other notes

Among the events taking place this weekend: The Biloxi Art Association stages an exhibition at Edgewater Mall, the Grass Roots perform tonight at Hard Rock, and you’ll see plenty of low-riding vehicles on the roadways for Scrapin’ the Coast.

Casino revenue jumps 11 percent in May

Biloxi’s nine casinos reported $79.5 million in gaming revenue in May, an increase of $8 million over April’s $71.1 million and a half-million dollars more than May 2007.

Mayor A.J. Holloway said he was pleased to see revenue rebound from a 20-month low last month, but he noted that for the fiscal year, Biloxi’s casino market is 4 percent off the record-setting pace of last year.

Mason ceremony: The Mississippi Department of Transportation, Mayor A.J. Holloway and the Biloxi branch of the NAACP will be among those honoring the memory of Dr. Gilbert R. Mason Sr. Saturday evening during a ceremony at the Biloxi Community Center. The 5 p.m. ceremony will feature the unveiling of the sign to mark a section of U.S. 90 as “Dr. Gilbert R. Mason Sr. Memorial Highway.”

City Council: The Biloxi City Council is not scheduled to meet next week while the Mississippi Municipal League will be in town.
