Despite intermittent rainfall and overcast skies, more than 50 young fishermen and their parents turned out Saturday for Catfish Kids Day at the Hiller Park pond.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks had stocked the pond with nearly a thousand freshwater catfish days before the event, and Sherry Bell of the Biloxi Parks and Recreation Department reports that even though all fishermen left with a good catch Saturday, “there are probably 500 to 600 fish still in the pond and some of them are as large as 4 to 5 pounds.”
Bell said the city and state plan to make Catfish Kids Day an annual event each October, and the pond is open for fishing during daylight hours.
