Cruisin’ downtown on Wednesday

It’s Cruisin’ The Coast week, and on Wednesday, the cruisers roll into Biloxi for the Downtown Block Party.

Thousands of cars and car aficionados will line the downtown streets from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of the 29th annual Cruisin’ The Coast event. Cars will be parked in downtown by police along portions of Howard Avenue, Lameuse and Main streets, and MLK Boulevard. During the event, the areas will be open to the thousands of car buffs who will walk around the area. No golf carts will be allowed.

“We ask that everyone be patient while entering and exiting the event,” said  Christopher De Back, assistant chief of police in Biloxi. “We will try to park everyone as quickly and safely as possible and help get everyone out quickly and safely as possible so that cruisers can get on their way to the next event.”

Cruisers wanting to park and display their vehicle in the block party area are encouraged to arrive as early as 5 a.m. and enter on Reynoir Street at MLK Blvd. Vehicles parking inside the block party area in lots 1, 2, 4, and 6 will be required to remain until the event ends. Those parked in lots 3 and 5 will be able to leave before the event ends. Click here to see the map. When the event ends at 3 p.m., all vehicles must leave the downtown event area.

“We want everyone to have a fun and safe time,” said De Back. “So please follow the direction of the officers and signage.”

The Block Party will feature Ty Taylor & Gram Rea at 8:30 a.m., Garry Wesley as the King of Rock and Roll at 11 a.m., and DD Thunder Band at 1 p.m., all performing on the City Hall stage. Also part of the event are special food and drink offers from downtown restaurants and shops, and trophies for the lowest vehicle, largest fuzzy dice, fattest rear tires, most-chopped top, most chrome, longest distance driven, longest painted flames (unbroken), The Peoples Bank Cup, Mayor & City Council Cup, and, from the Biloxi Police Chief, an award for “The car I’d most like to chase.”

Parking is first-come, and the event is sponsored by Biloxi Main Street, the City of Biloxi, Biloxi Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, The Peoples Bank, and the Biloxi Chamber of Commerce.
