Truckload of toys; agenda of issues; bike, schooner reports

An 18-wheeler packed with more than $75,000 worth of children’s toys and treats from Louisville, Ky. is expected to arrive in Biloxi later this week, in time for a Saturday morning Christmas party at a city park near the Lopez-Quave Public Safety Center.

“Operation Win for Kids” is the project of The Winner’s Circle for Children, a Louisville-based children’s non-profit charitable group, which has spent three months gathering toys and donations from Louisville residents and businesses to present to the “child survivors of Hurricane Katrina.”

City Council resolutions now online

The Biloxi City Council faces an agenda of a dozen measures when council members gather at City Hall this afternoon at 1:30 for their weekly meeting.

Topping the agenda are three measures involving a proposed multi-million-dollar condominium development on Back Bay. Other issues: a resolution for a two-year extension on payments on a $23 million bond issue for major traffic improvements; the emergency purchase of five police cruisers; and the purchase of temporary office space for the city’s Port Division.

Daily reports, photos from ‘100,000 Bikes of Bust’

The bike-riding members of Team-Wal-mart, who are now crisscrossing the Mississippi coastline in an effort to raise funds for 100,000 bikes for hurricane-stricken families, are now filing “from the road” reports and photographs each day on the city web site.

Ten Wal-mart managers joined Mayor A.J. Holloway Saturday morning at Yankie Stadium to kickoff a seven-day, 300-mile “100,000 Bikes or Bust” journey that is scheduled to return to the Lee Street stadium Friday afternoon.

Along the way, the managers are conducting interviews with Clear Channel radio stations across the country, encouraging listeners to make donations to the project through the Salvation Army.
