Storage trailer fire causes I-110 lane closures

A storage trailer fire under I-110 has resulted in the closure of the southbound lanes south of Bayview Avenue.

The Biloxi Fire Department responded to a fire under the overpass on Tuesday evening. Within 30 minutes, the fire of a City of Biloxi storage trailer was extinguished. However, the intense heat caused significant damage to the support columns and the underside of the I-110 bridge. The damage has resulted in the Mississippi Department of Transportation closing all southbound lanes south of Bayview Avenue.

During the closure, motorists are asked to exit at Bayview Avenue until a full repair assessment is completed and the necessary repairs are made.

MDOT is expected to conduct a formal bridge inspection on Friday to fully assess the damage.

While traveling the area, the Biloxi Police Department asks motorists to use both southbound lanes as long as possible to move traffic more efficiently when approaching the lane restriction.

“A very effective way to do this is zipper merging, Police Asst. Chief Chris De Back says. “Zipper merging is the practice of simply requiring cars to merge in an alternating pattern, just like a zipper works.”

When drivers are cautious and cooperate at the merge point, zipper merging has been proven to reduce traffic.

No timeline has been set for the reopening of the roadway.
