Steady stream of visitors greets new library

The city’s new public library officially opened its doors this morning, and library workers have been hearing the same comments from the steady stream of visitors today.

“They’ve all said that it looks nice, and they’re glad we’re open, but the comment that we’ve heard the most is that it’s so much better than the temporary trailer we had been in,” summer worker Matthew Toncrey said with a chuckle.

Librarian Charline Longino spent most of the day giving visitors a tour of the 22,000-square foot library, which is on Howard Avenue at Bellman Street, just north of the Dr. Frank Gruich Sr. Community Center and adjacent to the new Biloxi Civic Center.

The library currently features an exhibition of artwork and models of Point Cadet landmarks by Peter Jurich, and a display about the history of Howard Avenue created by historian Jane Shambra.

The library will be open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The library can be reached at 436-3095, and Longino can be emailed at
