David Staehling, the city’s director of administration and a longtime hoofer, will be among the handful of notables participating in the dance off at the
5th Annual Moonlight & Magnolias, the Dancing With the Stars-themed fundraiser that benefits the South Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The evening takes place Saturday, Aug. 11, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino.
Staehling will be performing with a lineup that includes Christina Carter, 2012 Queen Ixolib of Gulf Coast Carnival; Kenneth Jones, Coldwell Banker Alfonso Realty; Andi Oustalet, community volunteer; Dorothy Shaw, Ingalls Shipbuilding; and Romy Simpson, Negrotto’s Gallery.
“This event is a wonderful way to support our local Red Cross while enjoying an evening of food, fun and entertainment at the beautiful Beau Rivage,” said event chairperson Liz Joachim, a dancing alumnus from the inaugural event. “This year we’re adding several new aspects to the evening’s festivities including silent and live auctions, as well as honoring a local humanitarian whose name will be revealed closer to the event.”

Memorial fund established in name of firefighter’s daughter
The Biloxi Firefighters Association has established a memorial fund for Ashton Halula, 21-year-old daughter of veteran firefighter Eddie Halula and Royce Brune.
Ashton was killed in an automobile accident in Robertsdale, Ala. on July 6.
The fund has been established to assist the family with funeral expenses.
Eddie Halula has been a member of the Biloxi Fire Department for 28 years.
Contributions to the Memorial Fund for Ashton Halula may be made at any Hancock Bank or through the Biloxi Firefighters Association, 10626 Oak Crest Drive South, Biloxi, MS 39532.

Clean-up, Take 2: Those who want to help clean up fireworks remnants and other litter can join a cleanup of Biloxi on Saturday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Biloxi Town Green, where they will be provided with garbage bags, gloves and water. The effort, coordinated by S.H. Anthony Construction Co., had been planned for last week but was postponed because of rain.

Traffic signals: Biloxi Police Chief John Miller reports that MDOT has re-synched traffic signals on U.S. 90 from the Beau Rivage parking garage to Main Street. The signals had been snarling eastbound traffic for weeks, Miller said. See a traffic issue? Email traffic@biloxi.ms.us.
Nighttime meeting: The Biloxi City Council has announced that its Tuesday, Sept. 4 meeting will be at 6 p.m. in order to allow residents to comment on the municipal budget for FY 2013. State statute requires that the city allow the public a chance to comment during a hearing after normal business hours. The mayor and council are expected to hold budget sessions throughout August, and have a budget in place by mid-September.
