Sports Hall of Fame seeks nominees for 2019 class

The Biloxi Parks & Recreation Department is now seeking nominations for its 2019 class of the Biloxi Sports Hall of Fame.

If you know a retired athlete who contributed to the betterment of athletics in Biloxi, or a coach or individual who has played a supporting role for more than a decade, nominate them for the prestigious honor.

Nominees must be retired at least three years if an athlete or competitor, or have completed at least 15 years of service as a coach or supporter of Biloxi athletics, must have demonstrated good citizenship both in school and after leaving school, and must have contributed to the betterment of athletes in the City of Biloxi as a player, coach, or any supporting role of superior accomplishment.

Applications are available weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Parks & Recreation office, 377 Hiller Drive, or online at biloxi.ms.us.  Application deadline is Friday, June 28.

Among the criteria for selecting inductees are statistical performance, individual achievement, leadership, citizenship and community service.  The number of inductees each year is solely the discretion of the selection committee. 

The Class of 2019 will be honored during an annual banquet in August.

News & notes: Egg hunts, Howard Avenue, council

Citywide Easter event: The Biloxi Parks and Recreation Department will hold its annual Citywide Easter Extravaganza on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Barbara Ferrill Softball Fields at Hiller Park. The event is free and open to ages 11 and younger. To see the flyer, click here.

Special needs egg hunt: On Sunday, the Biloxi Parks & Recreation Department will hold its 9th annual Special Needs Egg Hunt Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Hiller Park Barbara Ferrill Softball Fields. The free event is open to all ages with physical and mental disabilities. To see the flyer, click here.

Howard Avenue: The “new” section of Howard Avenue may have fully opened Monday, but the “old” section at Benachi has temporarily closed while contractors tie in lines from from north of the CSX railway to south of CSX railway.
