Shuckers, family fun usher in Memorial Day weekend

The summer season kicks off this weekend with the Shuckers back in town for a three-game series, a two-day firefighter-headlined fun day on the Town Green, a family fun day at Hiller Park, and such headliners as Charley Pride and Peter Frampton in town.

And don’t forget, you’ll see a host of motorcycles and motorcycle enthusiasts in town for the Gulf Coast Memorial Day Weekend Blowout.

“This is our time,” Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich said earlier this week, heralding the big Memorial Day Weekend. “This is when we show our true hospitality and all of the great things we have to offer, whether you’re visiting for a weekend of a lifetime.

“We’ve taken steps to clean the sand off the highway, we’ve paved a bunch of roads in east Biloxi, and we’re ready to launch into a great summer. I want everyone to get out and have a great time.”

The Jump into Summer event on the Town Green Saturday and Sunday, is sponsored by the West End Hose Co. No. 3 and will feature plenty of fire trucks, pony rides and a host of children’s activities. The Friends of Hiller Park will host Splash into Summer on Saturday with water slides, bounce houses, train rides, arts and crafts, and more.

Biloxi firefighters test a new firefighting tool

Biloxi Fire Chief Joe Boney says a new liquid mixed with water running through fire hoses looks like it can help significantly reduce heat at fires and extinguish fires quicker, which can save lives, reduce property damage and minimize the wear and tear on the department’s No. 1 asset: its firefighters.

The department is continuing to test the new encapsulator agent, known as F-500.
