Several events, ceremonies on tap today, this weekend

Washer visitation, service is this morning

Services for longtime Biloxi Police officer Ray Washer will be conducted today, with a 10 a.m.-to-1 p.m. visitation at Bradford-O’Keefe’s Howard Avenue Chapel, followed by a graveside service, complete with Biloxi Police Honor Guard and a 21-gun salute, at Floral Hills, off Lorraine Road in Gulfport.

Washer, who died last week, served in the BPD for 32 years before his retirement in 2003.

Volunteer recognition ceremony bows this evening

More than 500 volunteers are expected to gather this evening at 5:30 at the Biloxi Community Center for the annual Volunteer Recognition Awards ceremony.

Mayor A.J. Holloway and Keesler Brig. Gen. Bill Lord will help honor those who volunteer countless hours for numerous events and programs in Biloxi each year. Refreshments and snacks will be served at the affair, which is free and open to the public.

Final signup for summer camp is this weekend

Parks and Recreation staffers advise that Saturday will likely be the final opportunity for residents to sign up for the city’s popular Summer Playground and Enrichment program.

Early registration began April 16, and some sites – North Bay and North Woolmarket elementary schools — have reached their 70-camper capacity. Only five spaces remain at the Popp’s Ferry elementary site. About two dozen spaces are available at O’Hanlon, Gorenflo and Lopez sites, while about 50 slots remain at Beauvoir and Jeff Davis elementary schools.

Saturday’s registration will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Biloxi Community Center on Howard Avenue.
