Police invite public to tour Edgewater office

Members of the Biloxi Police Department will hold a grand opening on Saturday, April 12 for a new satellite office at Edgewater Mall.

The public is invited to attend the 10 a.m.-to-2 p.m. affair, which will be similar to the department’s annual Night Out Against Crime and will feature free hamburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks, activities for children, and displays from the department’s canine unit, bomb squad, dive team and other police divisions.

The satellite office, which opened several weeks ago, is on the west side of the mall north of Dillard’s.

This site “will increase the visibility of the police department at a major retail outlet,” said Police Chief Bruce Dunagan. “It’s a self-contained office with a number of work stations that will allow officers 24 hours access to do a lot of work that they normally would have had to come downtown to do. In short, it saves time and money, and allows the officers to spend more time in their patrol area.”

The office, which will not be manned, will be used as circumstances dictate, Dunagan said, and also will offer space for officers to meet with citizens.

“This is not a mall security office,” the chief said. “The mall has its own security. This is primarily a satellite work station for our officers.”
