Motorists are being advised that traffic and parking will be limited on Point Cadet in the hours leading up to the dedication of the Biloxi Bay Bridge on Nov. 1.
MDOT says the bridge is scheduled to open sometime in the early evening, after a day of activities, a parade and 7 p.m. fireworks show.
Police, meantime, report that no parking will be allowed in the medians of U.S. 90 in east Biloxi, and that Myrtle Street at U.S. 90 will be open to limited traffic for most of the day. Instead, traffic should use Oak Street.
“It’s going to be a busy day down on Point Cadet,” Mayor A.J. Holloway said, “with lots of emotion and anticipation. At the same time, we have to keep traffic moving in the hours leading up to the bridge ceremony.”
For those planning to attend the event, Coast Transit will offer free shuttle service from its downtown transit center and from east Biloxi casinos throughout the day. Additionally, MDOT is erecting a large outdoor TV screen on the Biloxi Town Green, which will offer live images from the bridge ceremony. Cable One also will carry the same live images on Cable 18 for its subscribers along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The day is scheduled to begin with a lineup of musical entertainment by Biloxi elementary and high school students from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. MDOT will air video vignettes throughout the performances, as well as entertainment from the Ocean Springs side of the bridge.
An MDOT ceremony at the foot of the bridge in Biloxi is scheduled to take place from 2 to 3:15 p.m., with a ribbon-tying ceremony planned for 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. at the center of the bridge.
Afterward, around 5 p.m., a parade of first responders, motorcycles and antique cars will cross the bridge into Biloxi. At 7 p.m., a 30-minute fireworks show will light up the sky south of the bridge, signaling the formal opening of the bridge to the motoring public.
