Mayor’s daily update: Police patrols, latest numbers

The Biloxi Police Department has developed a new team that monitors social distances on the beach during the day and turns into a business watch during the night, making sure that closed businesses are secure.

The measure, which police have had in place for a week now, is one of the announcements in Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich’s daily video update today. The two-and-a-half-minute video is now on social media and the city’s website.

The mayor also updates the daily count of cases and tests reported by the Mississippi State Department of Health, and he reminded residents that bars and in-dining restaurants remain closed, but take-out or to-go orders are allowed.

Among the other annoucements: City workers will remain on their current work schedules until further notice, city facilities remain closed to routine walk-in traffic, and residents are asked to limit travel.

The new police detail, Police Chief John Miller said, has been effective.

“We think it’s the right thing to do,” Miller declared. “We’ve had two or three incidents where we’ve had to ask crowds to disperse. So far, everybody’s done what we’ve asked them to do. Right now, we’re in a mode of reminding people of social distancing. We need them to heed the advice.

“I also think business owners should feel some comfort in knowing that we’ve stepped up patrols.”
