Heavy turnout seen at Biloxi polling places

Municipal Clerk Stacy Thacker, who is responsible for overseeing municipal elections in Biloxi, says voter turnout has been heavy in Biloxi since the city’s 10 polling places opened this morning at 7. Voting will continue until 7 this evening.

Biggest issue Thacker has seen, especially at the Donal M. Snyder Sr. Community Center, is voters inadvertently attempting to vote at the wrong precinct. Instead, some of those voters were supposed to cast their ballots at the Margaret Sherry Memorial Library and Fire Station, north of the Popp’s Ferry bridge.

“This issue was primarily at the Snyder center because people in that area just voted there in November,” Thacker said. “The problem is, the polling places for national, state and county elections are not necessarily the same as municipal polling places. They are sometimes different because the jurisdictions do not cover the same areas.”

Voters unsure of where to vote should consult the Voter Information map that was sent to all residents last week, or see the online map of municipal polling places. Voters can also consult their county-issued voter registration card, which shows their national, state, county and city polling places, or call the mayor’s office at 228-435-6254.
