Cleanup, Town Green affair planned for Saturday

The city will host an Earth Day festival, titled “Go Green on the Green,” on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Biloxi Town Green.

Volunteers also are needed to pick up trash from 8 a.m. to noon. Trash bags and gloves can be picked up at the Town Green on Saturday.

Among the events planned: A 5K Fun Run at 9 a.m., sponsored by Beau Rivage; a Paint the Can trash-can decorating contest at 10 a.m., with cash prizes for adults and children; and a giveaway of 150 trees.

Those planning to visit the Town Green also are encouraged to bring a hat or shirt to tie-dye, as well as old computers, TVs, printers and cell phones for electronic recycling. Those attending also can learn how to make a compost unit and register to win one of two units, courtesy of Grand Casino Biloxi.

News and notes

Census appeal: Mayor A.J. Holloway is appealing to social-service agencies in Biloxi to help get the word out on the importance of Census 2010 after a report this week that only slightly more than half of the questionnaires mailed out in Biloxi have been filled out and returned. Holloway’s appeal is being made to two-dozen social service agencies that have received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the city over the years. Info line: The city has activated its information line at 435-6300 to help keep residents updated on any traffic issues. The line, which can handle more than a dozen callers simultaneously, offers a taped message that will be updated as needed. Plans are to staff the line with city workers beginning sometime Friday. Residents and visitors also are encouraged to sign up for free Bmail news alerts from the city. Anyone can sign up for free by clicking on Bmail on the front page of the city web site.
