Deadlines approaching for municipal elections

Elections for Biloxi mayor and City Council are just around the corner – in fact, Friday at 5 p.m. is a key deadline for would-be candidates – and the city is sending information to residents to make sure they know when and where to vote.

The party primaries, when voters will decide Republican or Democratic nominees for offices, take place on May 2 with the general election, where voters will choose from Democratic, Republican or Independent candidates, on June 6.

As of this afternoon, three offices are being contested: Ward 2, 4 and 7. (See The list.)

Those interested in seeking municipal office in Biloxi have until Friday at 5 p.m. to turn in their completed Statement of Intent and $10 filing fee to Municipal Clerk Stacy Thacker at Biloxi City Hall. Thacker will then present the paperwork to either the Democratic or Republican executive committees, depending on which party the potential candidate hopes to represent, for verification.

New this year: Voters at two polling places will be voting at new locations. Voters in Ward 2B who formerly voted at the Saenger Theater will now vote at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Municipal Building, 676 MLK Blvd. and those in Ward 6, who formerly voted at the Business Technology Center, will now vote at the A.J. Holloway Sports Complex, 765 Wells Drive.

Are you a registered municipal voter? The fact is, if you have registered to vote in a previous Biloxi municipal election, you should be a registered voter. However, if you have moved since the last election, you should update your registration information with the Harrison County Circuit Clerk’s office to reflect your new address.
