Children’s parade begins at 11 this morning

The moving of the Children’s Mardi Gras Walking Parade from Saturday to this morning means that more people will be watching the parade as it makes its way down Lameuse Street, from MLK Boulevard to the Town Green.

The parade, which begins at 11 a.m., had originally been scheduled for Saturday, but was pushed back until this morning to avoid bad weather.

“Changing a schedule always has an effect,” said Bill Raymond, one of the organizers of the parade, “but in this case, I think it will be a good thing. Businesses will be open, and I suspect people will step outside their offices to watch the parade, which is good for the kids. And as far as participation in the parade, the truth is, a lot of parents had already taken the day off since their kids were out of school today.

“So it ought to be good all the way around.”

More than 200 youngsters are expected to take part in the parade. Afterward, participants will take part in a costume contest on the Town Green, where they’ll also be treated to a free lunch.

Said Raymond: “People can still register between 10 and 10:30 this morning in the Saenger parking lot, and there’s plenty of seating in and around City Hall today. That won’t be the case tomorrow. It will be jam packed then.”
