Arlene Canaan, who recently retired after a 40-year career in the banking industry, Tuesday night was declared the winner of a special election to fill the Ward 3 seat on the Biloxi City Council.
Canaan received 414 votes or slightly more than 60 percent of the 686 votes cast Tuesday. Walter Blessey received 199 votes and Mike Hutter had 73 votes.
The Biloxi Election Commission certified the results Tuesday night, clearing the way for Canaan to soon be sworn in as the new Ward 3 representative on the seven-member Biloxi City Council.
The special election was called to fill the unexpired term of Jim Compton, who resigned to accept a position with an electric power consortium in Hattiesburg.
