Buffett concert airs Sunday on CMT; weekend preview; other news and notes

A 90-minute portion of Jimmy Buffett’s concert from the Gulf Coast airs live and commercial free Sunday evening on CMT, and Biloxi audiences might see a local connection on the live show and will certainly see scenes from Biloxi in subsequent airings of the concert.

Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band will host the show, which was postponed from its original date of July 1 and is expected to include such artists as Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown, Allen Toussaint, Sonny Landreth and others. The event, being beamed to the nation from the beach in Gulf Shores, Ala., is being organized to demonstrate support for and solidarity with residents, businesses and the culture of the Gulf Coast.

Of note to Biloxians: Among the guests scheduled to appear on the show Sunday is Bossier City, La., native Jesse Winchester, who in 1966 penned the opus “Biloxi,” a tune that Buffett later recorded and included on four of his albums.

Sunday’s live cablecast will be commercial free at Buffett’s request, but in subsequent airings of the special — schedule is below — CMT will include scenes from more than a dozen local communities before and after commercials.

The network was in Biloxi weeks ago and filmed several locations that had been suggested by the mayor’s office — beach scenes, a Biloxi schooner at sail, miniature golf, casino resorts, and one of the city’s “Welcome to Biloxi” signs, among them.

— OK, so the tune “Biloxi” may or may not be included in the concert. But you can hear it now, thanks to YouTube contributors. To see Jesse Winchester performing it in May 2009, click here.
