The Biloxi Council of Garden Clubs will have a floral-design authority on hand for a “hands on” workshop Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m. at the Old Brick House.
Guest speaker will be James M. DelPrince, an associate professor of Floral Design at Mississippi State University and published authority on floral design.
Seating is limited for the workshop, and registration and a $10 fee will be required. Call or e-mail Museums Manager Sheri Munter at 435-6308.
Those planning to attend should remember the new entrance to the Old Brick House can be accessed on Lee Street.
Dr. DelPrince has been a member of The American Institute of Floral Designers since 1992 and serves as President of the AIFD Southern Region. He is also a member of the Professional Floral Commentators International.
Dr. DelPrince has co-authored the “Book of Floral Terminology,” published by AIFD; and wrote a chapter in “A Centennial History of the American Florist,” published by Florists’ Review. In July, he and art professor Paul Grootkerk of Mississippi State presented the program “The Flowering Art: Floral Design in Art History” for the annual symposium of the American Institute of Floral Designers.
Dr. DelPrince is a member of the Oasis Floral Products Design Directors, a team of eight American floral designers who provide educational programs throughout North America. He has completed research in historical floral designs spanning the years 1790-1900. As part of this ongoing research, he received a fellowship with the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C. in horticulture of the American Classical period, 1790-1850.
With 23 years of professional design experience, he teaches five courses and oversees floristry student internships at Mississippi State University. Dr. DelPrince also serves as an academic adviser to students in the Retail Floristry Management option in Horticulture.
