Biloxi seeking nominations for Preservation Awards

The City of Biloxi has a rich and diverse cultural and architectural history.  In celebration of that history, Biloxi biannually honors individuals, businesses, and organizations that are protecting and restoring our architectural history as well as those working to preserve and promote our local cultural history and traditions.

To submit a nomination for the 2014 Preservation Awards, forms are available at the Biloxi Visitors Center, Biloxi City Hall, or the Biloxi Library at 580 Howard Ave.  Forms are also available online at biloxi.ms.us.  The submission deadline is Friday, July 25, 2014.

The Preservation Awards will be presented on Thursday, Aug. 7  at 5:30 p.m. at the historic White House Hotel, at 1230 Beach Blvd.  The White House will sponsor a reception and offer tours after the awards presentations.

“The awards ceremony always draws a big crowd,” said Bill Raymond, Biloxi Historic Administrator/Executive Planner,  “but will the added bonus of being at the White House Hotel, we are expecting record attendance.”

Council to consider McElroy’s exemption, new leaders

The owner of McElroy’s Harbor House Restaurant is asking the City Council for a city property tax exemption for his post-Katrina investment as part of the city’s post-storm revitalization efforts.

The issue will be one of several before councilmembers when they meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Among the other issues: election of a new president and vice president of the council, and several appointments to city boards and commissions.
