Weekend preview: First Friday, Peter Anderson and more

It may be a bit nippy outside, but it’s also First Friday, signaling the first-of-the-month gathering in downtown Biloxi, and there’s hot chili.

During the 5:30 to 8 p.m. downtown street party, primarily on Rue Magnolia, visitors will find a chili cookoff, as well as music by Brandon Kenyon and Nevin Applewhite. There’s also a free reception to mark the opening of “Letters Levity & Light by MC Drake,” a new exhibition at Gallery 782.

Of course, the big event of the weekend is in “Vieux Biloxi,” also known as Ocean Springs. It’s the award-winning Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival, which on Saturday and Sunday will attract tens of thousands to downtown Ocean Springs, where they will see more than 450 artists and craftsmen showing off pottery, paintings, jewelry, sculptures, woodwork, metal work, handmade tile pieces and more.

The event is named in honor of the late master potter Peter Anderson, original potter of Shearwater Pottery, founded in 1928.

Also this weekend: Ronnie Milsap and Brian McKnight are at IP, a Fleetwood Mac remix is at Hard Rock, and Patti LaBelle is at the Beau Rivage.

And the weather this weekend? Sunny skies are forecast for Saturday and Sunday, with a daytime high of 62 both days, and dipping into the 40s at night.
