Biloxi A to Z: This week’s video features a recap of the city affairs, downtown navigation, and an upcoming celebration of heritage.
On Tuesday, the Biloxi City Council approved Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich’s appointment for the city’s new Chief Administrative Officer, Rick Weaver. CAO Weaver officially began overseeing the city’s day-to-day operations on Wednesday morning. Weaver is a decorated Army Veteran with more than thirty-seven years of service. As an Army Engineer, Weaver served at every level of leadership and held primary key staff positions. He commanded the two Mississippi Army National Guard installations, Camp McCain in North Mississippi and Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center just outside of Hattiesburg. If you have driven around downtown lately, you may have noticed new signage. Biloxi Main Street is installing nearly 50 new directional signs throughout the area. The directional signage, or wayfinding signage, is designed to help the public navigate the Main Street District from point to point. The signage also showcases public parking areas in Downtown. The project was federally funded through the American Rescue Plan Act grant and cost more than $71,000.
In addition to the signage, the project included $30,000 for 300 pole banners showcasing holidays and events, and $20,000 for cleaning and updating the Green House Alley on G. E. Ohr St. Both of these projects have been completed.
The City of Biloxi will join the Movers and Shakers Social Club in hosting the annual Juneteenth celebration set to take place this weekend. The Juneteenth Weekend Celebration, which is free and open to all ages, begins today with a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament at the John Henry Beck Park basketball court, 671 Division St., at 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, celebrations continue with a unity walk/run, vendor booths, and live entertainment. Those interested in participating in the unity walk/run may register for free beginning at 7 a.m. The walk/run begins at 8:30 a.m. and is a two-loop course from John Henry Beck Park to O’Reily Park.
Then from 3-9 p.m., there will be a Juneteenth Celebration on the Biloxi Town Green, 710 Beach Blvd. The festivities include vendor booths, food booths, a children’s area, and live entertainment. All events are free to attend.
