Veterans observances planned Friday, Saturday

Two events commemorating Veterans Day are scheduled to take place in Biloxi, a program at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor on Friday at 11 a.m., and a parade through downtown on Saturday morning.

The Friday program, which will be held near the Purple Heart memorial and USS Biloxi superstructure, will feature Brig. Gen. Paul F. Capasso, commander of the 81st Training Wing at Keesler, as speaker. Afterward, a reception with refreshments will be held at the American Legion Post, 131 Lameuse St.. On Saturday, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Veterans will sponsor a parade that will include dozens of entries, including two bands, as many as 300 uniformed marchers and various military vehicles and displays.

The parade will form at 11 a.m. on the service drive south of the Biloxi Lighthouse, proceed north on Porter Avenue, turn east on Howard Avenue, continue around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, south on Lameuse Street, and pass a reviewing stand at City Hall before disbanding at the Town Green.

Gorenflo seeks help with playground work

Administrators at Gorenflo Elementary — the two-year-old, $10 million elementary school that sustained 5 feet of floodwaters in Hurricane Katrina – are looking for volunteers to help assemble playground equipment.

The work is scheduled to take place Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the school, which is at the corner of Lameuse and Elder streets on Back Bay in Biloxi. To find out how you can help, click here.
