Two of Mississippi’s premier black collegiate marching bands will headline Biloxi’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Monday, Jan. 21.
Mississippi Valley State and Alcorn State will march in Biloxi’s MLK parade and perform in a program and “Battle of the Bands” immediately after the parade, in Biloxi Yankie Stadium.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. from Biloxi Yankie Stadium, travel west on Division Street, south on Reynoir Street, east on MLK Boulevard, north on Main Street and returns to Yankie Stadium via Division Street.
“We’ve seen this celebration grow by leaps and bounds,” said organizer James Crowell, head of the Biloxi branch of the NAACP. “And we’re looking for another great celebration this year.”
The bands, along with Jackson State University, have performed for three years at MLK celebration in Biloxi and each year have attracted thousands of spectators to Yankie Stadium.
The MLK celebration is sponsored by the City of Biloxi, the Biloxi branch of the NAACP, the Coastwide MLK committee and St. Paul United Methodist Church in Biloxi.
