U.S. News: Biloxi is one of nation’s top family beach spots

U.S. News & World Report has a new report out on the USA’s best family beach vacation destinations, and Biloxi is ranked No. 5 in the country, right behind Maui and in front of such locales as Hilton Head, Martha’s Vineyard and Destin.

“Glittering casinos line the Beach Boulevard, calling out to your inner gambler;” the report says. “The sugar white sands of Ship Island beckon to families; and hidden gems like the historic Beauvoir grounds pique the interests of even the most casual Civil War enthusiasts.”

The online compilation, released today by U.S.News, “considered factors like safe waters, kid-friendly attractions, dining options, spacious accommodations and multigenerational appeal to determine the list.”

Ranked No. 1 was San Diego, followed by Ocean City (N.J.), Honolulu-Oahu, and Maui. Behind No. 5 Biloxi were Outer Banks, Hilton Head, Martha’s Vineyard, Sanibel Island, and Destin.

The report, which includes 16 photos of Biloxi sites, acknowledges the city was hard hit by Katrina in 2005, but noted “the Biloxian spirit is resilient and many local businesses, restaurants and casinos have reopened new and improved. So take a breath of that magnolia-sweetened air and saddle up to the card table, Biloxi is ready to play.”
