Stadium project to see movement next week

The first hints of construction on the proposed MGM Park at Beau Rivage, the downtown baseball and entertainment venue, will be taking place next week, as the clock winds down to the 2015 baseball season.

City Councilmembers will be asked to approve contracts for the initial site work at the proposed MGM Park at Beau Rivage at their meeting on Tuesday, and as a precursor to that site work, you’ll be seeing Mississippi Power Co. crews re-locating utility poles on parts of Caillavet Street beginning Monday morning, weather permitting.

The city received nearly a dozen bids for the aspects of the initial phase of the site work, according to City Engineer Damon Torricelli. “We were pleased with the range of those bids, and we’re also pleased to report that they were within the $4 million budget for the initial site work,” Torricelli said.

Mississippi Power Co. crews meantime, will be relocating seven utility poles to the east side of Caillavet Street, beginning Monday, with work continuing throughout the week. Intermittent lane closures will be required in the easternmost lane of the four-lane Caillavet Street. Wiring on the new poles will be high above existing trees on the east side of Caillavet Street.

Work on the stadium site itself could begin in a couple of weeks, Torricelli said. The 2015 Southern League baseball season begins in May 2015.
