Galaxy of stars to fete Schooner at MGM Park this evening

Biloxi’s league-leading Shuckers face the Mississippi Braves this evening and Saturday, and tonight’s fireworks extravaganza aside, there will be a galaxy of stars at MGM Park later today.

It’s Schooner the Seagull’s birthday, and the Shuckers plan a huge, star-studded pre-game party for the team mascot. Check out this guest list: Finny from Margaritaville Biloxi, Pierre from the New Orleans Pelicans,Gumbo from the New Orleans Saints, Mr. & Mrs. Slice from Papa John’s, Trusty from the Mississippi Braves, Seymour from Southern Miss, Mac from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, the Gecko from Geico, What-A-Guy from Whataburger, Sporty from Sports Clips, and a group of birds from Gulf Islands Waterpark.

Tonight’s game begins at 6:45 p.m. Gates at MGM Park open at 5:30 p.m., and the game will be capped by a huge fireworks show.  Then on Saturday, the Shuckers will host Military Appreciation Night, recognizing soldiers and their families with a pre-game enlistment ceremony on the field. The team also will be dressed in military-themed jerseys, and the first 1,000 ticketed fans through the gates will receive a Tactical Military Shuckers Hat. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Fais Do-Do, Blessing dominate weekend

The 89th Annual Fais Do-Do, French for “street dance” and the Mass of the Blessing take place Saturday, signaling the Blessing of the Fleet weekend.

Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, but the Fais Do-Do gets underway at noon at Point Cadet Pavilion. You’ll find a day of live entertainment, cultural exchanges, arts and crafts vendors and seafood dishes. Hours are noon to 10 p.m., and the evening will be headlined by the Bucktown All Stars, who perform at 7 p.m.. In addition, you’ll also find a late-afternoon “Glow Run” as part of the occasion.

Then on Sunday, the celebration continues with the ceremonial wreath dropping at 2 p.m. in the Biloxi channel, as Boats will line up south of the Biloxi Lighthouse for the annual blessing.

News and notes: New fire station, traffic update, B-alert

Cedar-Popp’s station: Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich on Tuesday will ask the City Council to move forward with a new battalion-size fire station to be constructed on city property on Popp’s Ferry Road, east of Cedar Lake Road.
