Shuckers face Generals in league championship

The Biloxi Shuckers, who on Saturday won the South Division championship over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, travel to Jackson, Tenn. Tuesday to kick off a best-of-five Southern League championship with the North Division champions, the Jackson Generals.

The championship series will continue with second game in Jackson on Wednesday and returns to Biloxi on Friday for Game 3. Games 4 and 5, if necessary, also will be at MGM Park.

The Shuckers enter the championship series in the final stretch of what General Manager Hunter Reed calls a magical season.

“In 15 years working in this business, I’ve never been around a team quite like this one,” Reed said. “They are special.  Led by the Manager of the Year Mike Guerrero, there is no quit in these guys, as they’ve proven over and over with magical eighth-inning rallies and different players stepping up each night.

“We were the only team in the league to reach 80-plus total wins (81-59) as well as the only team with more than 40 wins at home (47-23).  So playing at MGM Park in front of Shuckers fans over a Friday and potentially into Saturday and Sunday is ideal.  Our Friday night crowds brought it all season, so we’ll need that to continue as we go against a tough Jackson Generals (75-64) team.  We edged them out in the regular season series by going 5-4 against them, so fans should expect to see some good match-ups.”

Added Reed: “From a fan perspective, in addition to the excitement of post-season baseball, we’ll continue to offer the best possible fan experience and a $5 playoff special on all beer in the ballpark.”
