Council to consider Ohr issue in special meeting

The Biloxi City Council will conduct a meeting on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 to discuss providing city support for the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art.

The meeting will be at City Hall and will be open to the public.

A committee of three councilmembers — George Lawrence of Ward 1, Bill Stallworth of Ward 2, and Clark Griffith of Ward 4 — has met with the Ohr-O’Keefe board to discuss manners in which the city could assist the financially strapped museum.

The partially completed Frank Gehry-designed show place, which has grown to a $40 million undertaking, has suffered from increased operating costs and less-than-expected attendance, and has operated without city funding since Hurricane Katrina.

Councilmember Stallworth said the committee planned to suggest that the city fund property insurance for the Ohr museum, pay half of the museum’s monthly utility bill, and maintain the grounds at the beachfront site.
