Party at the Point heads up trio of events; other news and notes

The BP oil spill made it impossible to stage the annual Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic Rodeo this weekend, says organizer Bobby Carter of the Isle Casino Hotel, so, instead, visitors to Biloxi’s Point Cadet Marina will find a Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic “Rendezvous,” an event designed to raise awareness of the progress made at Point Cadet Marina.

The event, also being called “Party at the Point,” kick off this evening with free concerts by Kan-Dee-Side and Confederate Railroad, and Saturday shows featuring Isis @ 3pm, Dwayne Dopsie, the Atlanta Rhythm Section and Foghat.

A 9:30 p.m. fireworks show will cap off the evening Saturday, and then on Sunday, the Isle will host a Black & Gold Tailgate Party featuring Rickey Jackson and Hugh Green.

Elsewhere in Biloxi, you’ll get a firsthand look at trials and tribulations of battlefield life during the Civil War when Beauvoir presents its annual Fall Muster. The two-day event will have skirmishes, cannon demonstrations, camp settings, and tours of the grounds are included in the admission price.

And, finally, the Biloxi Town Green on Saturday will host the Back Bay Mission’s Puttin’ on the Roux, an annual family affair that features competing gumbo chefs.

City Council: Huge agenda with continuing issues

The Biloxi City Council on Tuesday will face an agenda of nearly four dozen issues, including a few recurring measures that are making repeat appearances: employee furloughs, bed-and-breakfast regulations, and zoning changes at the Malpass Landing subdivision.

The furlough and Malpass Landing issues are back on the agenda after two councilmembers — Lucy Denton and Ed Gemmill — were not able to attend last week’s meeting.
