New park to be built in Eagle Point, Woolmarket

Residents in the Eagle Point and Woolmarket areas of Biloxi will soon have a park to call their own.

Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich, Councilman Nathan Barrett, engineers and other city officials broke ground Wednesday afternoon on the park and to hear Barrett tell it, the new city park could be akin to Hiller Park, the city’s prized public recreation area in West Biloxi.

“This new park at Eagle Point is going to be the city’s largest park outside of Hiller,” Barrett said, “and it’s going to be the first city park for Ward 7, so we want it to be special.”

The park, being constructed with $415,000 in state and local funds, will offer a walking track, basketball and pickleball courts, playground, pavilion, a sports field for soccer and football and restrooms. It is scheduled to open after the first of the year.

“What’s more,” Barrett said, “we’ve worked with the Harrison County Utility Authority to make use of land that had been a lagoon, and we’ve been fortunate to have assistance from our state legislative delegation and county partners to help make it happen.

“To be honest, I want to see two other parks like this in Ward 7. It’s the largest ward in our city and this park makes a statement: The residents of Woolmarket and Eagle Point deserve and will get first-class amenities.”
