Diversity shines on Town Green Saturday

The city celebrates its diverse culture this weekend on the Biloxi Town Green.

On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. a host of vendors and entertainers will fill the grounds for the city’s inaugural Multicultural Festival, an event that brings together the wide-ranging Gulf Coast culture to one spot.

More than two dozen food vendors, an eclectic list of performers, informational booths and free admission will be part of the affair.

“We have food vendors selling anything from Italian, Vietnamese, American, Honduran, Mexican to barbecue,” Parks & Recreation Director Cheryl Bell said.  “We will also have inflatables, arts and crafts, games and lots of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.”

The entertainment will include performances by the El Pueblo Dancers and the Dragon Dancers, and music by DJ. Boogety, DJ Ice Man, the alternative band Adams Destruction and the self-proclaimed “high energy party band” Unfazed.

Biloxi firefighters will be on site offering fire truck rides, and the Biloxi Police Department will have a safety tip and informational booth set up.

The Multicultural Festival is organized by the Biloxi Parks & Recreation Department and the Biloxi Block Captains.

Outdoor activities also highlight the weekend activity schedule.

It’s movie time on the Town Green tonight. “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” will be shown at dusk this evening as part of the city’s summer movie series. The concession stand, operated by the Friends of Hiller Park and Police Explorers, opens at 6 p.m., with a host of activities beginning at 6:30, just before the movie. Admission is a can or bag of dog or cat food for the Humane Society of South Mississippi.

Then on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., you have a chance to climb to the Biloxi Lighthouse in the “Climbing with Heart” fund-raising event for the American Heart Association. The usual $5 fee ($2 for children) will be waived, but donations will be accepted for the cause.

In the casino resorts, you’ll find the Clairvoyants entertaining at the IP and Peter Cetera performing at the Beau Rivage, and there’s a circus over at the Harrison County Fairgrounds.
