Freezing temperatures expected tonight, Wednesday

Biloxi and surrounding areas will see another hard freeze  tonight and Wednesday night, with winds creating a wind-chill factor as low as 10 degrees.

The bitter cold, which prompted a Winter Weather Advisory, may include a brief period of a possible light mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, according to the National Weather Service.

Tonight, temperatures are forecast to be as low as 33 degrees, with a wind-chill of 10 degrees because of a North wind of 15 to 20 mph. There’s also a 50 percent chance of rain.  On Wednesday, the day’s high is forecast for 39 degrees with overnight temperatures in the mid to low 20s and a 16-degree wind chill.

“Please remember that with this winter weather, freezing temperatures are possible causing ice on the bridges, depending on the rain,” Biloxi Emergency Manager Michelle Crowley said. “Be cautious, and if you must travel, slow down. Be aware of black ice on roadways. Residents and business owners, take care of the four Ps – your people, plants, pipes and pets.”

The Winter Weather Advisory has led to the opening of two cold-weather shelters: The Salvation Army Cold Weather Shelter, 2019 22nd Street in Gulfport will be open tonight, Wednesday night and Thursday night, and the Fournier Multi-Purpose Building, 10395 Automall Parkway Blvd. in D’iberville will be open tonight and Wednesday night.

Biloxi Public School leaders say classes are planned for their usual times Wednesday.
