Library program to focus on Biloxi builder

Those anticipating the annual cemetery tour scheduled for later this month can whet their appetite Thursday when the Biloxi Public Library hosts a presentation titled “Carl Matthes: Designer of Biloxi.”

The free program, sponsored by the library’s Local History and Genealogy Department, begins at 5:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The library is at 580 Howard Ave.

Matthes designed a host of well-known landmarks that have been lost to time or storms: the Buena Vista and Tivoli hotels, the old Biloxi Hospital on front beach, and the Isle of Caprice pavilion. He also designed Biloxi High School, which is home of Biloxi Junior High School today.

In addition to the Matthes presentation, visitors to the Thursday evening affair will get a sneak peek at the some of the characters who will be featured in “Builders of Biloxi, this year’s cemetery tour, which is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m., and Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Biloxi City Cemetery.
