Gilich seeks Council OK for MGM Park deal

Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich on Tuesday will ask the City Council to add four items to its meeting agenda to follow up on the agreement to open MGM Park for its first game on Saturday.

The mayor is also revising two existing agenda items involving MGM Park – an agreement outlining revenue and maintenance for the scoreboard and video board, and a measure for the city to apply to the Mississippi Development Authority for a larger share of sales tax revenue generated at the park.

The council meeting takes place Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Biloxi Civic Center.

“The measures involving the park opening early are in line with the agreements we reached last week to ensure that we play our inaugural game on Saturday, June 6,” Gilich said. “There are no surprises in that regard. It’s just what we said it would be – no additional expenses to the taxpayer outside of what we are already committed to in the contract. In fact, we’re controlling costs.”

Two other items being added involve change orders to the construction: $78,000 to comply with Americans With Disabilities requirements, and a $17,000 expense to add communications lines to the Beau Rivage employee parking garage, an expense that will be funded by Beau Rivage.

Said Gilich: “Our goal in announcing these additions to the agenda publicly is to ensure that we have transparency.”
