The November issue of BNews Monthly will be arriving in homes and businesses across the city next week, and all of Biloxi will get the first look at plans for the new Barq Building in downtown Biloxi, as well as a detailed map showing progress on paving in east Biloxi.
The 16-page city newsletter features a cover story about the initial mixed reactions to the construction of the West Biloxi Boardwalk and brick-covered restoration of Howard Avenue, as well as a report on a new boardwalk that’s just beginning construction at the easternmost tip of the Biloxi peninsula. In fact, Sharkheads patriarch Ronnie “R.P.” Peirotich, a passionate fan of the boardwalk, originally compared the construction fencing at the site to the wall President Trump wants built at the U.S. southern border.
Elsewhere in the issue, developer Lee Edward Young provided an artist’s rendering of the restored Barq Building, which will be in an area he and partner Hobbs Mize call “The Howard Avenue Entertainment District,” encompassing 230,000 square feet of boutique shops and local breweries, 330 one-, two- or three-bedroom residential units, and 20,000 square feet of office space.
BNews Monthly also includes the November Community Calendar, a story about holiday cooking safety, and stories about Biloxi Public Schools and the district’s latest national Blue Ribbon award, a repeat honor for North Bay Elementary. “Back in the Day” columnist Jane Shambra writes about the age-old All Saints Day tradition of visiting grave sites and adorning grave markers with mums.

Dress up, have tea and get crafty this weekend
Tonight ghosts and goblins will fill the Donal M. Snyder Sr. Community Center for the Special Needs Halloween Costume Ball. The Biloxi Parks & Recreation Department hosts its annual event from 6 to 9 p.m. The affair is free, includes a costume contest with awards for adults and youths, and food. All ages with physical and mental disabilities are invited.
Then on Saturday, Biloxi Excel By 5 will hold its annual Take a Trip to Wonderland event from 10 to 11:45 a.m. at the Lopez School off St. John Avenue. Alice and the Mad Hatter will host a tea party from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. and arts and crafts will be available from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The free event is open to ages five and younger.
The East Biloxi Senior Center, also on Saturday, will host a craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Located at 461 Parker St. off Bayview between the IP and Boomtown casinos, seniors will be selling their handmade gifts, fall and Christmas decorations, baked goods and more as a benefit for the center. The East Biloxi Senior Center hosts weekly activities such as ceramics and arts and crafts for those ages 55 and older.
Elsewhere this weekend: Unused and expired prescription drugs may be dropped off at the Public Safety Center on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Here Comes the Mummies, an eight-piece funk-rock band, and Kenny G will each perform at the Beau Rivage, and Brian McKnight and STYX will each be at the IP Casino.

Fire stations receiving Michael aid through weekend
Anyone wanting to assist the Biloxi Fire Department with donations for Hurricane Michael victims has until Sunday to drop off items.
The department is currently taking part in a Coastwide relief effort, where residents can drop off supplies at any local fire station. The items may include: gift cards for Wal-Mart, Visa, Home Depot, Lowes; tire repair kits, Fix-a-Flat; bottled water; Gatorade; Pedialyte; flavor packs for waters; lighter and matches; batteries and flashlights; phone and car chargers for iPhone and Android; power strips; hair clippers; baby wipes, diapers and toiletries; bug spray; cleaning supplies; and Advil, Aleve or Tylenol. No clothes are being accepted.
“We thank everyone for the donations we have already received,” said Biloxi Fire Operations Chief Andy Mason. “We are sure the victims will be thankful for this overwhelming support from our community.”
Items will be picked up on Monday by the Gulfport Fire Department for delivery to Florida next week.
Donations will be accepted at all Biloxi fire stations until 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Christmas on the Water: The Christmas on the Water committee is inviting all boat owners to attend its kick-off party at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum. Heritage Hall of Fame: The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum will induct its newest members into its Heritage Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the museum on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The individuals were chosen for their dedication to honoring the tradition of the maritime and seafood industry on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
