Fireworks on council agenda today

Members of the Biloxi City Council today will consider making fireworks legal in Biloxi on the Fourth of July, New Year’s Eve and in association with the annual Tet celebration.

The measure, which first appeared on a council agenda in December, is one of three dozen issues on the agenda for the City Council meeting this afternoon at 1:30 at City Hall.

Also on the agenda: A proposal for Weed Out, a Youngsville, La., company to remove debris from city drainage easements, including Sunkist Country Club ponds. The easements, which date back to the 1980s, help drain nearby streets, including On the Green, Auburn and North Country Club Road. Cost of the work: $11,345.

The fireworks issue, which was originally on the council agenda Dec. 29 and tabled three times, would make it legal to shoot fireworks on the Fourth of July and on New Year’s Eve, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fireworks also would be allowed during the annual Dragon Dance for Tet celebrations.

The meeting will be streamed on the city’s LIVE channel. Go to biloxi.ms.us and click on the LIVE button at top right.
