This week in economic development, a demolition permit was issued to remove the remaining façade of the Hutter Building in the Vieux Marche’. The fenced-in remnant of the structure has been an eyesore in the downtown area since the building burned in January of 2011. This demo was necessary to make way for the new Vieux Marche’ Plaza, a proposed five story, mixed use building with commercial uses on the first floor and residential above. The developer has plans to incorporate the bricks from the existing structure into the new building which will have a façade and balconies reminiscent of Historic Biloxi.
In other news this week, at Tuesday’s meeting, the city council conducted the first reading of the proposed ordinance to establish a tree committee. The second reading and discussion will be held at the city council meeting on February 10.
