Council eyes variance issue; holiday meals on way for needy

The Biloxi City Council has called a special meeting for Tuesday afternoon to vote on an ordinance designed to streamline the variance process for homeowners hoping to re-build non-conforming structures that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

The meeting will begin after the council’s 1:30 p.m. meeting, when the first reading of the proposed ordinance will take place.

The back-to-back meetings are occurring to satisfy statutory requirements that two readings of a proposed ordinance take place before it is voted on.

The ordinance — a compromise from an earlier proposal that called for blanket variances — would reduce the variance process for homeowners from six to eight weeks to between 20 and 30 days.
