The city will formally unveil plans for the revitalization of the Point Cadet waterfront during a public presentation Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Dr. Frank G. Gruich Sr. Community Center on Howard Avenue.
The meeting is a follow-up to a March meeting where about a hundred residents gave their views on a number of proposals from Tulane architecture students about possible public uses for a 17-acre site at the easternmost tip of the Biloxi peninsula.
“This is going to show people how their ideas have been incorporated into a plan to revitalize the Pont Cadet waterfront, north and south of the Biloxi Bay Bridge,” said Grover Mouton, executive director of the Tulane Regional Urban Design Center. “This plan is what the public has asked for. It’s simple and buildable.”
Mayor A.J. Holloway, an alumnus of the Tulane-run Mayor’s Institute on City Design, had asked Mouton to develop a plan that would create better access and enhanced public use of the public land, including a waterfront boardwalk that would connect the areas north and south of the Biloxi Bay Bridge; an expansion of Point Cadet Marina; an entertainment pavilion and outdoor stage; and other amenities, such as a restaurant, that would foster more public use of the area, which is the eastern gateway into the city.
The effort has created a plan that encompasses all of those goals, as well as sees the rebuilding of the Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum near its pre-Katrina location.
Mouton plans to provide an overview of the plan Wednesday evening, and the city’s director of Administration, David Staehling, will discuss how the city plans to fund construction, which has an initial price tag of nearly $25 million.
