City to auction vehicles, bikes, computers, tools, other property

Longtime auctioneer Nick Clark says bargain hunters will find great deals this weekend when the city auctions more than 200 surplus or seized vehicles, jewelry, tools, TVs, computers and other material, and it’s going to be a great deal, even for spectators.

The city will be auctioning the property, including nearly a hundred bicycles, Saturday at the city impound yard on Popp’s Ferry Road.

Those interested can preview the vehicles on Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the impound yard, which is on city property just east of the Cedar Lake Road. The auction itself, which has a $10 admission fee, takes places Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. A concession stand will offer food and soft drinks.

“I would say that you are going to get unbelievable deals,” said Clark, a licensed auctioneer who has been in the business for more than 30 years. “The highest bidder takes it, regardless of the bid. The $10 admission fee is non-refundable, but even if you don’t buy a thing, you’re going to get a lot of entertainment for $10.”

The items will be sold “as is, where is,” with no guarantees or warranties. All purchased items must be removed no later than Tuesday at 4 p.m. The auction will accept cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard or Discover cards. City of Biloxi employees are prohibited from bidding on items.

The items run the gamut, Clark said.

“What we do have,” Clark added, “is a lot of city-owned equipment, and city-owned equipment seems to be better taken care of than old, abandoned or seized equipment. It’s a good variety, too, with plenty of vehicles, tools, bikes, copiers, printers, Christmas decorations, and so on. This will be a better-than-average auction.”

Latest on the spill: More boom and more closures

The state on Tuesday announced that additional layers of boom would be placed in several areas, including the Bay of Biloxi and near Deer Island, and on Wednesday, more waters were closed after emulsified oil was found between Ship and Horn islands.
