City updates gaming revenue figures

The city’s Finance Division has released the latest gaming report, a compilation based on collections made by the state.

Since July of 1992 (licensing fees were collected a month before the first casino opened), the Biloxi casino market has generated:

$20.2 billion in gross gaming revenue

$2.47 billion in total state and local taxes

$1.62 billion in state taxes

$475 million in city taxes

$185 million to Harrison County

$129 million to Biloxi Public Schools

$64.9 million to Harrison County public schools

$44.1 million in licensing fees

How the state numbers are computed: Casinos report revenues and pay tax to the Mississippi Department of Revenue weekly. On the 10th day of each month, the Department of Revenue pays the city its share of tax revenue received in the previous calendar month. However, the state figure usually includes taxes paid for a weekly reporting period that includes days from the previous month because the end of the weekly reporting period does not coincide with the end of the calendar month. The city’s Finance Department then computes city, county and state taxes based on the city’s share.
