City to send $10,000 to tornado-stricken Alabama town

The Biloxi City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a request by Mayor A.J. Holloway that the city send $10,000 to Enterprise, Ala., where a tornado last week killed eight students and inured more than 50 people.

Holloway, who in the wake of Hurricane Katrina fielded dozens of calls and e-mails from colleagues across the country offering assistance, added the relief measure to the council’s agenda at the outset of Tuesday’s meeting.

“Instead of sending clothing or other material that may cause logistical issues, I thought it best that we allow the leaders of Enterprise to use this money as best-needed, to meet their immediate needs,” said Holloway, who telephoned Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell Tuesday, only to find the mayor was attending a funeral for one of the tornado victims.
