“Scrapin’ the Coast,” a car show that bills itself as “the wildest show on the Coast,” returns to Biloxi for the seventh year this weekend, and Biloxi leaders are asking participants to be respectful of the new asphalt on Beach Boulevard and to obey traffic ordinances.
The event is expected to attract about 2,800 to 3,000 vehicles to Biloxi, according to an organizer, or about 900 vehicles, according to the Coliseum. Cars and trucks in the show have been customized to ride low to the ground, hence the name “scrapin’ the Coast.”
Registration and drive-through judging takes place throughout the day today and Saturday at Treasure Bay Casino Resort, while the car show itself takes throughout the day Saturday and Sunday a half-mile west, at the Coast Coliseum.
The show, which attracts an audience younger than that of Cruisin’ the Coast, will feature frame-dragging, burn-out and stereo contests; and hydraulic and air-bag competitions. Those events will be held at the Coast Coliseum, while drag racing takes place Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. at the Gulfport Dragway off Canal Road.
Organizers also encourage participants to cruise Beach Boulevard on Saturday night.
“We certainly welcome this event to our community, and the local organizers have kept us informed of their plans and activities,” said Biloxi Police Chief Linda Atterberry. “We are asking that motorists refrain from things such as scrapin’ the pavement or ‘burning out,’ which would damage the asphalt on Highway 90.”
Ronny Tolar, a Gulfport resident who is one of the organizers of the event, said he has asked particpants to be aware and respectful of traffic regulations.
Because of the anticipated increase in traffic on Biloxi roadways, the city will have additional patrol units monitoring traffic.
“Spectators will be using the U.S. 90 or Beauvoir Road entrances to the Coliseum, but participants must use the Beauvoir Road gate,” Atterberry said. “This means there will be heavy and slow-moving traffic, particularly east and west of the Coliseum and on Beauvoir Road, as participants and spectators make their way into the gates. Motorists may want to use alternate routes unless they are going to the event.”
