City Pool Receives Renovations

The doors to the Biloxi Natatorium will close for approximately five months beginning on Sunday, December 23, to receive much needed renovations.

The project, contracted for 150 days, will include a new retractable roof, panel walls, exterior steel handrails, and heaters; a fresh coat of paint; and replacement of the pool bottom and tile markings.

This extensive project was initiated two years ago when the facility lost several roof panels, as well as other minor damages, from the storm.

“The new roof system for the Natatorium results from damages due to Hurricane Katrina,” stated Nathan Sullivan, Parks and Recreation Director. “However, having the pool closed also allows us to do other needed work.”

In addition to structural repairs, the Natatorium will receive new lane ropes and lifeguard stands and will have the patio fence and broken tile throughout the building replaced.

“I am really looking forward to the renovations” said Jamie Lee, Aquatic Specialist. “This facility is used by many and has been around for over twenty years. When we re-open, I feel that everyone will be pleased with the pool’s new look.”

During the Natatorium’s closing, patrons may use the Donal Snyder Sr. Community Center Swimming Pool, located at 2520 Pass Road. The Center will accommodate the additional swimmers by adding lane ropes and extending its hours. The pool will be open for adults Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6 – 8 a.m., 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., and 2 – 8 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 6 .am. – 8 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 – 4 p.m. The pool will be open for children, ages 17 and younger, on Monday through Friday from 4 – 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Biloxi Natatorium was originally built as an outdoor pool in the early 1980s and became an enclosed pool in 1988 allowing the facility to be open year round. The Olympic size pool currently has a retractable roof, showers, changing rooms and offers recreational swimming to all ages as well as swim lessons. After renovations and repairs are complete, the facility will resume all of its programs.
