City of Biloxi opens registration for its Start Smart Program and holds a Grow Smart workshop – 03/10/2011

The City of Biloxi Parks and Recreation Department has opened registration for the first 20 participants for its Start Smart Basketball Program. Registration is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Recreation Office, 377 Hiller Drive.

The Program is open to children ages 3 to 5 and their parents or a responsible adult. Sessions will begin on Thursday, March 10 and continue for five following Thursdays, ending on April 7. Each will be conducted from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Mercy Cross Recreation Center, located at 390 Crusader Street. Participation is free for City of Biloxi residents and $25 for non-Biloxi residents. Registration will continue weekdays until session is full.

A mandatory first initial meeting will be held on Thursday, March 3 at 6 p.m. This meeting will be at the Biloxi Family Resource Center at Lopez School, 140 St. John. In addition to the meeting, a Grow Smart Program meeting will take place. This Grow Smart Program is an Excel By 5 workshop that showcases the importance of sounds/symbols for reading and how it relates to early school performance. This workshop is open children birth to age 5. No registration is required and this workshop is free.

Both the Start Smart Program and Grow Smart Program are designed to promote and improve early learning skills, development and opportunities.
