City launches new citywide monthly newsletter, calendar

The City of Biloxi today is launching “Bnews Monthly,” a full-color monthly newsletter and calendar of events designed to help keep citizens across the city aware of myriad city projects and events.

The first edition of the newsletter, dated June 1 and expected to arrive in homes in the next several days, includes nearly two dozen stories, highlighting the status of ongoing infrastructure projects; work at Popp’s Ferry Causeway Park, on the West Biloxi boardwalk, and pending repairs at public piers; the redevelopment of Howard Avenue; and the two new fire stations in the works to serve areas north of the Bay.

Coinciding with the June 1 beginning of hurricane season, the newsletter also contains a wealth of information on how residents should prepare for storms and flooding.

The centerpiece of Bnews Monthly is a four-page calendar of events, which also highlights events of note.

“We have a huge array of public improvements projects underway or in the works across our city,” Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich said, “and the City Council and I feel that it’s important that residents are kept informed about the progress we’re making each and every day, on the big projects such as the ongoing infrastructure work, and the day-to-day achievements in our various departments. This newsletter is going to foster a sense of pride in our city and a sense of community among all of our residents.”

Bnews Monthly is being funded with existing money used for state and federal notices the city is mandated to mail, along with Community Calendar that had limited distribution. Bnews Monthly also will feature a limited amount of advertising from Biloxi businesses and groups.

It is being mailed the last week of each month to all Biloxi homes, businesses, apartments and condominiums, distributed at city facilities and posted online.

Rain may be a factor this Memorial Day weekend

Local weather authorities are asking the public to closely monitor weather reports throughout Memorial Day weekend.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 50 to 90 percent chance of rain throughout the weekend with a chance of flooding in low-lying areas. Forecasters also are monitoring a low pressure system that at 2 p.m. today was over the eastern Yucatan Peninsula, south of the Gulf of Mexico.

Forecasters also say that showers and thunderstorms may increase as the system builds.

As a precaution, the City of Biloxi has opened six sandbag locations for residents: Henry Beck Park, 671 Division St.; Todd Migues Park, 425 Parker St.; Cavalier Park, 2059 Lawrence St.; Popp’s Ferry Soccer Fields, 2150 Popp’s Ferry Road; Fire Station 8, 8479 Woolmarket Road; and Fire Station 9, 9370 Oaklawn Road.

These are self-serve sites, meaning residents need to have a shovel to fill the sandbags provided at the sites.
