Hundreds turn out for clean-up campaign

Hundreds of individuals and groups volunteered to help keep Biloxi beautiful last week during the Great American Clean-Up campaign.

The campaign began on Saturday, April 16 and ended on Saturday, April 22.

“We had great support,” Downtown Services Manager Kay Miller said.  “Over the course of the week, we had about 250 participants including about five dozen on Saturday alone.”

The weeklong event, an annual campaign held by the city in accordance with Earth Day, promotes a clean, green and more beautiful community.

“It’s outstanding to see citizens interested in keeping Biloxi safe, friendly and beautiful,” Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich said.  “We have 5.7 million visitors a year to Biloxi and the Gulf Coast, and this is the kind of community-wide effort we need to keep Biloxi litter-free. But we need to remember that this needs to be a yearlong focus.”

More than 250 bags of trash were collected and all participants were given free trash bags and gloves to use.
