Breakfast with Mayor is Thursday morning

Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo” Gilich will update a Biloxi Chamber audience on the progress in Biloxi during “Breakfast with the Mayor” Thursday beginning at 8 a.m. at Hard Rock Live inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

The session is open to the public and provides an informal setting for the mayor to discuss issues and answer questions from the audience.

The chamber is also scheduled to distribute $7,000 in small-business grants and unveil the poster for the 2015 Biloxi Seafood Festival.

Parents, take a moment to register your students

Friday at 3 p.m. is the deadline for registration for those planning to attend Biloxi Public Schools, and school leaders say the response has been positive to this inaugural year of online registration.

As of this morning, online forms had been submitted for 576 new students and 2,875 returning students.

Still there’s a ways to go: About 5,200 Snap codes – passwords enabling online registration – had been sent out to parents and prospective students.

“We’ve made it as convenient as we could for parents,” said Dr. Glenn Dedeaux, director of Student Services for Biloxi Public Schools. “Now, we need the parents to take a few minutes to go online and fill out the paperwork so their students can attend school on the first day, Aug. 6.”

One other important thing to remember: Registration is not complete until two proofs of residency have been shown at the school the child will be attending.

“This is the week we’ve set up for that,” Dedeaux said, “so we’re hoping parents will take action now. We’ve also had several phone calls about whether a utility bill within the last 30 days in still a requirement. Yes, it is.”

Added Dedeaux: “The parents have been positive and pleased with the online registration process. They are very appreciative of the short wait time to get through the process.  We just need more parents to get involved.”
